I love the OF area, and the two rooms sound "restful", lol, but with that many days, I have to agree spending some of them at Canyon gets you less windshield time. Not inside the park, but to insure wildlife sightings, you could make a trip to West Yellowstone to the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center (fair warning, West seems to have the most expensive McDonalds anywhere) Another possibility, again, costly, would be the chuckwagon dinner out of Roosevelt while you stay at Canyon (too far from OF to get back before dark). The kids might like one of the Yellow Bus tours, maybe one of the evening ones, so the adults can relax and let someone else do the driving late in the day, but for a large family that can really add to the budget. Kid friendly hikes: Storm Point, Natural Bridge, Lone Star Geyser (take lunch and plan to wait for it) Trout Lake, Yellowstone Picnic area. I like the beach behind the Fishing Bridge VC, water is cold- not for swimming, but it is a nice place to stretch out those legs relatively safely, lol. You probably already know about the Jr Ranger Program and the Young Scientist Program? The visitor centers are excellent for kids.
